Yo Heave Ho (Sea shanty) written 2021

A song about the cycle of life and the desire to last forever! I wrote it while hiking by the sea. When sang it to my mom (she's 97) at her kitchen table, she cheered every time I got to the chorus.

lyrics

Yo heave ho
And I’m on my way again
Rolling with the tide
Yo heave ho
No matter what’s around the bend
Into the salty brine I’ll drive
I found a picture and a postcard
Of a little girl who had a marvelous career
But now that everything’s all wrapped up in bows
What does she know? Where does she go?
They say a life is like an arrow
And its trajectory a solitary arc
But I don’t want to live that straight & narrow world view
I want to still go far, I’m on a shooting star
[CHORUS]
Shedding dreams, like a snake sheds skin
Like a fire goes out, then spreads its arms again
Like me and my mama keep saying goodbye
For now, just for now that’s all
And though we know the tractor of time is coming
To plow us under and push off the ledge
He works on weekends; he takes no vacations
Steam-roller time is coming, with his big cigar
But I want my arc to be: Golden arches,
A miracle of natural resilience
I don’t want to go underground
I don’t want to stop making sound
I don’t want to go underground
I don’t want to stop making sound
[CHORUS]
Into the mystery I’ll dive
Into the deep blue sea, with what is left of me
