There's a woman on the ice in the road at night All dressed in black and her feet are bare And her big brown eyes reflect the candle She is holding so high, Her torch of freedom's fight There's a woman in red in the desert sand In a country far from the one I know And she waves flag as white as snow, Fighting back her fear As her fluttering banner grows TORCH OF FREEDOM, FLAG OF TRUCE. WHEN WE GONNA SEEK THE TRUTH? There's a man outside looking in the door, Doesn't understand what the fighting's for, But he doesn't see a whole lot more Than rich or poor Creating endless war There's a child in blue underneath the sea, Doesn't seem like you, doesn't seem like me, But he sings away courageously, And lets his spirit soar 'Cause that's what life is for UNDER WATER BREATHING AIR DO YOU THINK THAT THERE'S A GOD OUT THERE? We are always changing like the river Flowing in and flowing out One side ever hopeful One side full of pain and doubt Sometimes overflowing Sometimes there is no rain at all Listen up ahead, friend, round the next bend... Do you hear the waterfall? UNDER WATER BREATHING AIR DO YOU THINK THAT THERE'S A GOD OUT THERE? ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN UPON A WAR NO MAN CAN WIN TORCH OF FREEDOM, FLAG OF TRUCE. WHEN WE GONNA SEEK THE TRUTH? LOVE YOUR MOTHER, FORGIVE YOUR FATHER, CARRY YOUR BROTHER ACROSS THE WATER.

COWGIRL © JoanneRand 2011 I don’t wanna know what time it is I don’t go truckin’ with the time Don’t you tell me, don’t reel me in Don’t lay down no line I am just a Gypsy woman My heart is bound with the wind I am a cowgirl out on the plane Runnin’ hard again I don’t wanna know what time it is So don’t go claimin’ it’s too late Don’t you tell me this is all here is Or I’ll be slippin’ out the gate I am just a troubadour I am a wanderer by trade A honey-bee inside of me Is bound to pollinate I feel hemmed in in town Routine gets me down Give me a wild river or two And I’ll be good as new Give me a wild river or two And I’ll be good as new Yee-hah!

Underneath the Maple -J. Rand 8/11 In the rain Playing my guitar Underneath the maple Raindrops sound Louder than they are Underneath the maple Family either side of me Hear the raindrops fall In our tent cocoon and flannel jammy Underneath the tall tree It's gonna be a sweet night, just you wait and see Underneath the maple tree 20 mile from nowhere, where I want to be Underneath the maple tree Who will go Venture to the car Sandwiches are waiting Raindrops sound Louder than they are Will they be abating? Draw straws Ro-sham-bo Tell me who will go Peanut-butter No matter what the weather It's gonna be a sweet night, just you wait and see Underneath the maple tree 20 mile from nowhere, where I want to be In your arms beneath the maple tree All night long I hear the raindrops fall I know that they are calling me Safe and warm Underneath the storm Sleeping with my family (repeat) It's gonna be a sweet night, just you wait and see Underneath the maple tree 20 mile from nowhere, where I want to be In each other's arms beneath the maple tree 20 mile from nowhere, where I want to be Holding on beneath the maple tree

RING THEM BELLS THE FIRE IS DANCING RING THEM BELLS THE STORM HAS COME NATION OF EARTH LAND OF OUR BIRTH Storms rising, skies tumbling down People gathering together as one Hoping for change and changing as it comes When it hits survival level revolution has begun WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT... WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT? NATION OF EARTH? LAND OF OUR BIRTH Look deep in our eyes, there's a fire inside Comes from a feeling much deeper than pride Comes from the land of our birth, Comes from a handful of earth Comes from the fire and the sky and the rising tide WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT... WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT? NATION OF EARTH? LAND OF OUR BIRTH RING THEM BELLS THE FIRE IS DANCING RING THEM BELLS THE STORM HAS COME

Whale 04:27
WHALE SWIMS INTO MY BELLY WHALE SWIMS INTO MY HEART WHALE, SHE WILL BRING US POWER FROM ANOTHER WORLD APART WHALE, WHALE, WHALE MAGNETIZING AND MAJESTIC BREATHTAKING, POWERFUL TAKING BREATH FROM EVERY PERSON BREATHING POWER TO THEIR SOUL. WHALE She swam up the River, with her baby, who weaned and returned to sea, Leaving mama whale to circle endlessly Mormons and tourists, bikers and those who could barely walk, made pilgrimage Running from side to side across traffic to view mama whale from the bridge I went three times. Took my folks. They said they would never forget. ‘Cause she made you feel good & you kept that good feeling when you left A visitation from another life form. We all grew protective of her. Why was she doing this? Why couldn't we drive her Back to the sea where she'd be safe and free Magnetizing and majestic Breathtaking, powerful Taking breath from every person Breathing power to their soul. Was she trying to tell us something? Was she driven insane While her baby was calling: There multiple problems in our oceanic plane CHORUS same In Yurok tradition when a whale’s in the river, it means: world is out of balance we all get together, beat our feet on the ground and we pray and we sing and we dance And we tilt the earth back to avert tragedy We tilt the earth back the way it is supposed to be she was trying to tell us something She was driven insane and her baby is calling: she’s calling you by your name CHORUS same Magnetizing and majestic Breathtaking, powerful Taking breath from every person Breathing power to their soul.

Let yourself be happy Happiness is a choice Don't just keep the peace, don't just settle Raise your voice Do not pretend to be content deep within When you long to laugh Don't let familiarity and fear of change to be Hold you back Honor your dreams Blaze your path This is my prayer Long may you laugh Love is all that matters In the aftermath Love is all that matters In the aftermath So let yourself be happy Happiness is a choice Don't just keep the peace, don't just settle Raise your voice Honor your dreams Blaze your path This is my prayer for you Long may you laugh Love is all that matters In the aftermath Love is all that matters In the aftermath

Weird Kid 04:59
The Problem was apparent when I was just a kid Other kids thought I was weird ‘cause of things I did Like hike alone into the woods and sing to an old growth tree Or hide from helicopters in a game called “refugee” I WAS A WEIRD KID COULD’T UNDERSTAND HALF THE THINGS I DID I’VE SPENT A LIFETIME TRYING TO BUILD A BRIDGE BACK TO THAT OLD FRIEND O MINE Came down to a decision between money and my time Should I be a mathematician or choose some other line So I looked around and saw the kind of person I’d become Then I grabbed the nearest greyhound hoping to become someone I COULD BELIEVE IN AND I WAS JUST A TEENAGER THEN BUT I’VE SPENT A LIFETIME LOOKIN’ BACK FOR THAT OL FRIEND So I started trampin’ round the highways of this land Singin’ for my supper hoping you would understand Moved into the outback on a river wild and free Spent the best years of my life living in a tree IN MY TWENTIES, ‘TILL I WAS 30 YEARS OLD THOUGHT I’D FOUND MY POT O GOLD PLACE WHERE I’D FIT IN BUT SOMETHING MADE ME HIT THE ROAD AGAIN Now I’m getting seasoned like some old apple tree Lots o rot and ripening fruit on me And I see that pigtailed kid w/ a big stick standing on a mountaintop She know everything she need to and more before she drop AND THERE’S A PART OF ME KNOWS THAT I WON’T EVER BE SOMEONE WHO BELONGS THAT’S WHY I HAVE TO SING MY SONGS SING MY SONGS THAT’S WHY HAVE TO SING MY SONGS

I am a broken sailor And no one does love me I’m saddled and I’m sore In mine own country I know I canna’ tell you What life is going to be When law and order Catch up to me. I am a broken sailor I am an only man Hoping you’ll understand That the breath of life is only In the work that I must do. I hope it speaks to you. I am a broken sailor And no one can love me ‘Till I’ve settled my score In mine old country I know I canna’ tell you What life is going to be When law and order Catch up to me. Now I tramp the highway I sail the sea alone And all the world is Home. And the breath of life is only In the work that I must do. I hope it speaks to you. There was a clap of thunder O’re the desert of my heart And a monsoon dropped a deluge On land cracked and parched. A serpent deep within me Uncoiled her spiny tail And breathed fire into a life That had been pale. There was a clap of thunder And the dragon of my heart Tore my house asunder And my family apart. All who stood before me All those who held me true Were swallowed up in flames of blue. I am a broken sailor I am an honest man I’m tortured and I’m tried In my own homeland And you know I canna’ say What my future it will hold ‘Till law and order And the truth be told. I am a broken sailor I am an only man Hoping you’ll understand That the bread of life is only In the work that I must do. And I hope it speaks to you… And I hope it speaks to you… And I hope it speaks to you…

about

This album is titled "Stories from the Inside Out (Nashville Sessions)" because I am a storyteller. I tell stories in the first person, crawling inside the skin of each song and turning it inside out for the listener to get the visceral, the real.. I try to translate personal truths, which are often universal.

We recorded most of these songs in Nashville, where I studied guitar and songwriting with the legendary bard Steve Young. A pioneer of “outlaw” country music and the Americana movement, Young wrote Seven Bridges Road, which it seems like everyone, not just the Eagles, has covered, and Lonesome Ornery and Mean, one of Waylon Jennings’ best songs. What I love about Steve’s style is the authenticity of his voice: long, open-throated vocals sweeping over galloping guitar licks. There is an intensity of truth there. He sings and writes because he is compelled to do so. I feel the same way.

With a hand-picked team of professional musicians and technicians, I produced and arranged these songs over the course of a year. The mix was produced by master engineer-producer Stephen Hart (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Neville Brothers, David Bowie, White Stripes). Hart is Chief Engineer at the legendary Bay Area recording studio The Site, and he serves as a National Trustee of San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, which produces the Grammy Awards. [Instrumentation includes: vocals, guitars, bass, violin, viola, cello, flute, synth, harmonium, kalimba, and some light percussion

I have tried to remain faithful to the roots of this work: a woman, a guitar, a story.
