Chain of Ships

from Still a Real World by Joanne Rand

/

about

This song was based upon a dream I had. I recorded it solo in a private studio in Nashville, TN., then sent the tracks to a friend of Tim Randles, Mike Zaneski, who had just lost his mother after being her caregiver for fifteen years, and he produced this piece. We have never met in person, but I am honored at his gift to this song.

lyrics

CHAIN OF SHIPS

Last night I dreamed a chain of ships
Your ship was last in line
Through arctic waters black and deep
Your ship began to fall behind
I reached my arm to draw you in
The vessel I was on
You leapt in faith of your own yen
to land onboard, but you were wrong
You hit the deep just inches shy
Of the rail at my left hand
I saw your body slipping down
As time ticked by, I'd understand

I THOUGHT I'D SEE YOU
I STOOD THERE WAITING
MY WHOLE LIFE STOPPING
MY WHOLE HEART BREAKING

Last night I dreamed a chain of ships
Your ship was last in line
Through arctic waters black and deep
Your ship began to fall behind
I reached my arm
To draw you in
You leapt, you went down
Never to be seen again

I STOOD THERE WAITING
TO DRAW YOU FORWARD
BUT ALL I'M SEEING
IS EMPTY WATER

I'm frightened at the loss you
Elated at your choice
To take that simple leap, my friend
I'm frightened at the lack you
Elated at your find
To take that simple leap, friend of mine

Last night I dreamed a friend of mine was
Born into the dust
In times of deepest undermine
I lack a little trust
You are a friend I know so well
And will be gone
I hear the future dreams foretell
And would they were wrong

YOU STAND THERE WAITING
YOU BODY SHAKING
YOUR WHOLE HEART WAKING
YOUR MOMENT BREAKING

I'm frightened at the loss you
Elated at your choice
To take that simple leap, my friend
I'm frightened at the lack you
Elated at your find
To take that simple leap, friend of mine

LOVE IS ALL WE HAVE
TO ABIDE THE CHAIN OF TIME
OUR SPIRITS OVERLAP
YOUR HAND BRUSHES MINE

I STAND HERE WAITING
MY WHOLE HEART WAKING
I STAND HERE WAITING
MY WHOLE HEART WAKING
