lyrics

Greyhound Rapture

Today's the day the world's supposed to end
How many days like this one have their been
'Nother rapture 'nother mile guess I'll count them in a while
The day I meet my maker and friend

Thought I'd ride the Greyhound bus to my old home
Disillusioned and footloose I roam
Characters in every seat, I'd like for you to meet
So sit back and I'll bring 'em on.

Lucy, she's a wild one one, can't you see
Floor length sable coat across her knee
Applies her eyes with practiced hands, but her eyeballs dance
You can see the whites around them litterally
She wounded, she's hounded by fear
She'll do anything to make her past disappear

OUT ON THE GREYHOUND, HALFWAY TO NOWHERE
THE RAPTURE ARRIVES
WE'RE A SHIP FULL OF FOOLS AND ONE LITTLE DRIVER DRIVES
AND THE BUSINESS OF LIFE THRIVES

Olga carries carpet bags galore
Lugging dresses that she once wore
She's fussy and sweet to everyone she meets,
But if you don't watch out she'll park at your front door

Here's a guy who really reads his bible
He sits right next to me
For five hours straight he never lifts his face
And he's filling the pages with pink highlight phrases

Pale young couple, Nora and Rex
Nervously sitting in horn-rimmed specs
Artsy-fartsy, almost avante-garde
But life's been hard on their self-respect

OUT ON THE GREYHOUND, HALFWAY TO NOWHERE
THE RAPTURE ARRIVES
WE'RE A SHIP FULL OF FOOLS AND ONE LITTLE DRIVER DRIVES
AND THE BUSINESS OF LIFE THRIVES

And the driver says:
If you're caught smoking
Or drinking booze
Your seat you'll lose

Here's a tall, imposing, elder man
Tribal cheif. Uncle Dan
Scarlet jogging suit and dread-locked hair
And a crown crocheted by his lady friend
This man could be president, he's humble and fair
This man could help us all out of here

OUT ON THE GREYHOUND, HALFWAY TO NOWHERE
THE RAPTURE ARRIVES
WE'RE A SHIP FULL OF FOOLS AND ONE LITTLE DRIVER DRIVES
EACH OF US HOPING ONE SIMPLE PILGRIM SURVIVES
AND THE BUSINESS OF LIFE THRIVES

And the driver says:
If I can hear you
Then you're too loud
So keep it down

At the city station
I swim through bodies
Midnight-colored hooded eyes
I see my sister
She too afraid to step outside
She's hiding in her car
Jesus people!
How we gonna find the Rapture
If this is all we are.

The USA is a strange place
I'm captivated by my human race
I cannot disclaim this land I am from
Or underestimate how far we've come
